Matej Bizovičar: The Crib
light installation
Makalonca arcades along the Ljubljanica river
15 June−11 July 2020
The new ambiental installation by Matej Bizovičar consists of a mass of all kinds of creatures that grow from the arcades of supporting walls on the river bank. As the artists says, the installation thematizes the intrusion of different unidentified life forms that represent something uniquely alien to the visually homogenized and gentrified environment. These fantastically overgrown and luxuriant creatures that resemble pores or microbes evoke the bubbling of the original life forms in the primordial soup: the artist is thematizing the miracle of life – this is the fifth element in all its stubbornness and indestructibility.
Matej Bizovičar (1969, Ljubljana) in 1991–1995 studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. He’s been creating since 1993 in his studio in Metelkova mesto. He’s also worked in theater, for the Radio Študent and was involved in the Hostel Celica project for more than 20 years. He also makes a living by equipping bars, tourist facilities and residential areas. He creates unique furniture and is strongly dedicated to woodwork in general. Apart from paintings he also does sculpture, spatial installations and mosaics, such as for example the Ribogunci installation that was shown in Light Art District in Skopje and in Vilnius Light Festival.
