LUCIJA ROSC: 18
Light installation
Vegova Street 4 // until 22 June
OPENING: Friday, 24 May, 9:30 p.m.
Lucija Rosc commemorates the coming of age of the Lighting Guerrilla Festival with the help of an old custom, which is not often encountered in Ljubljana or in big urban centres – she will place a real maypole on Vegova Street. A maypole, a tall spruce or fir tree with a bare trunk and a crown of branches, which is usually decorated with ribbons and a flag or some other symbol, people nowadays place at home especially during birthdays or major celebrations. Lucija Rosc’s maypole combines traditional elements of such festive blazes, but is upgraded with the author’s own artistic expression and enriched with a moment of interactivity. In this way, the author aims to establish a bridge between the folklore heritage of the past and contemporary visual art, thereby encouraging a reflection on the continuity and adaptability of cultural tradition over time.
LUCIJA ROSC (1995) graduated in photography at the Faculty of Applied Sciences VIST in Ljubljana in 2018, and obtained her master’s degree in Visual Communication Design, majoring in photography, with special honours at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana (ALOU, UL) in 2022. She is the recipient of the UL ALUO Prešeren Award for her master’s thesis and this year’s nominee for the OHO award. In her artistic practice, she combines a research approach with playful interpretation, drawing inspiration from childhood memories, family archives and the environment in which she grew up. Her works were presented at the contemporary photography fairs Unseen Amsterdam and Photo Basel, the contemporary art fair Viennacontemporary, the Metelkova Museum of Contemporary Art, Škuc Gallery, P74 Gallery, DobraVaga Gallery and Fotografija Gallery.
