Alicja Panasiewicz: The River Ljubljanica Lighthouse

The light installation of the Polish artist Alicja Panasiewicz draws inspiration from the Slovene building heritage, which she tries to integrate into new semantic and spatial contexts by means of the appropriation process. The starting point of her project are two lighthouses, which as sentinels watch over the entrance to the Piran harbour; the author recreated and placed them next to the water under Plečnik’s Triple Bridge. The rich symbolism of the lighthouse, which signals a safe journey, a return home, is thus revealed to the viewer along the water axis of the capital city. An additional element of the installation appears as a dialogue with Plečnik’s heritage: namely, in her design of lighthouses, the author used or reworked the architect’s design and decorative motifs in order to interpret tradition with modern authorial touch.

ALICJA PANASIEWICZ is a visual artist. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland. Since 1996, she has been working at the Faculty of Arts of the Pedagogical University in Krakow, where she teaches biodesign, environmental art and visual structures. Among other things, she conducts workshops on visual perception and environmental art for students. In her artistic work, she creates lighting objects and installations, focusing on the phenomenon of light in space and the aesthetic value of both.
