At the workshop, which took place as part of the Lighting Guerrilla Laboratory, under the guidance of an international group of mentors, students from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Ljubljana, and the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy from Wroclaw, Poland, connected. The concept and naming of the project refer to the attention-grabbing eponymous exhibition, which Bruno Munari and Giorgio Soavi set up in 1962 at the Olivetti store in Milan. Arte programmata, which could be translated as ‘programmed art’, denotes a variety of artistic practices that were inspired by machines or industrial production: they are kinetic or optic and often also highly participatory works of art, since the viewer was supposed to make a crucial contribution to their final form. Arte programmata is considered as a kind of forerunner of interactive art, which simultaneously breaks down the conventional barriers between the artist, work of art and viewer.
The workshop in Ljubljana was based on the exploration of space, light and shadow. The participants designed an object that simulates digital pixels with the help of analogue elements. These were brought to life using stop motion animation. Students from Wroclaw upgraded the project by means of generative video approaches.
